Bargello
Simple Repeat

jeanfarish.com

This diagram shows a portion of the third band. It is a repeat pattern, shown in full on the chart on the previous page. In the instructions below I use the word thread to mean the linen threads in your fabric. I use the word fiber to mean the "thread" you use for stitching. For this band, use two strands of floss; refer to the chart for colors. If you find that the coverage is too thin for your taste, experiment with three or four strands.

NOTE: to keep all the bands even, there is a compensating stitch in the center group of stitches. Make five upright stitches rather than four in the centermost section.

NOTE: Lines on the stitch diagram represent linen threads, not the usual squares on a chart. Remember, each square on a chart represents two linen threads crossing two linen threads.

First Step: Work left-to-right. Begin with two upright satin stitches side-by-side. These and every other stitch in this Bargello pattern is two threads high. You will stitch in between linen threads. Do not skip any.

Next, make a group of two more satin stitches that are placed like those marked "3" & "4" on the diagram, above. Continue stitching as diagrammed until the row is even with the band above.

Be sure to remember the compensating stitch in the center group of stitches. Make five upright stitches rather than four in the centermost section. Before you begin the second row, check your work!

Second Step: Now it is easy to copy this row with the next color. The two rows will share holes where the colors meet. The shaded stitches represent the first row. It is important to continue stitch bottom-to-top as diagrammed so that your needle will enter the "shared hole" from the front of your fabric.

In general, it is best to make satin stitches in a sort of circular motion, always moving in the same direction whether it be right-to-left or bottom-to-top, etc.

To begin and end your stitching fiber: You can use the loop method for your first stitch. Cut the floss in 32" lengths and use a single strand folded in half to make a 16" length. This is enough floss to complete a row. To end, slip your needle under a few stitches on the back. Clip closely.
